Police say the Democrat, who served from 2018 to 2022 and once faced sexual assault allegations, shot his wife before turning the gun on himself. Their teenage children were inside the home at the time.
Former Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax and his wife, Cerina Fairfax, were discovered dead inside their Annandale, Virginia home in what authorities are describing as a murder-suicide. Police responded to the residence just after midnight Thursday morning and found both individuals with gunshot wounds. Fairfax was 47 years old.
Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis confirmed at a press briefing that Mr. Fairfax shot his wife before taking his own life. The couple’s two teenage children were home at the time, though neither was injured. The nature of their involvement with the immediate aftermath was not disclosed.
“The couple had been engaged in an ongoing domestic dispute surrounding a complicated divorce proceeding,” Davis said.
Court records confirm that divorce proceedings between Justin and Cerina Fairfax, a licensed dentist, were actively underway this year. Investigators believe the domestic conflict was a central factor in the tragedy.
A Political Rise Shadowed by Controversy
Justin Fairfax was elected Virginia’s lieutenant governor in 2017, becoming only the second Black man to hold statewide office in Virginia. He served alongside Governor Ralph Northam for a term that began in relative normalcy before being upended by one of the most turbulent stretches in recent Virginia political history.
In early 2019, just as calls mounted for Northam’s resignation following the surfacing of a racist yearbook photo, two women separately accused Fairfax of sexual assault — one alleging an incident in 2000 at Duke University and another in 2004 during the Democratic National Convention. Fairfax denied both accusations firmly and refused to step down. The mounting scandals effectively paralyzed all three top levels of Virginia’s government when the state attorney general also acknowledged having worn blackface in college. Ultimately, all three officials completed their terms without further consequence.
Fairfax sought the governorship in 2021, running in the Democratic primary against former Governor Terry McAuliffe. The campaign was largely underfunded and lacked institutional backing. During a primary debate, Fairfax made national headlines when he accused McAuliffe of “treating me like Emmett Till” — a reference to the slain civil rights figure — in demanding his resignation after the assault allegations. Fairfax finished fourth in the primary, capturing roughly 3.6 percent of the vote. McAuliffe went on to win the nomination but lost the general election to Republican Glenn Youngkin.
A Community in Shock
News of the deaths sent shockwaves through Virginia political circles, where Fairfax remained a recognizable figure despite his failed gubernatorial bid. Colleagues from his time in office offered condolences, while advocates for domestic violence prevention highlighted the case as a sobering reminder of the often-hidden crises that unfold behind closed doors — even within prominent families.
The investigation remains ongoing. Fairfax County police have not yet released additional details about the sequence of events or what may have immediately preceded the shooting.
